How to Draw the Caput from Any Angle

Bones Forms

To draw the head from any angle you must first empathize its basic structure. Look past all the distracting details and visualize the underlying forms. This power to simplify can be applied to the features of the face, merely when starting the drawing you could look fifty-fifty further. Ignore even the features and simplify to the most basic form of the head. I use a method taught by Andrew Loomis in his volume, "Cartoon the Caput & Hands".

The head deconstructed into its bones forms, is asphereas the cranium and ablock as the jaw and cheek bones.

basic forms

A Sphere equally the Attic

The sides of the caput are flat, and then we can slice off a piece from both sides of the ball. From profile, this airplane will be a perfect circumvolve, but when drawing it from any other angle, it volition appear to be an oval because of perspective. Divide this oval into quadrants. The vertical line represents the beginning of the jaw. The horizontal line represents the forehead line. The top and bottom of the oval help you find the pilus line and the bottom of the olfactory organ.

A Block as the Jaw and the Cheek Bones

Attach the shape of the jaw. The top will start at the forehead line and the back volition start at the centre of the oval. This is a 3-D volume with a front end plane, side planes, and bottom plane (bottom airplane is seen from some angles).

Constrution From any angle

Step 1 – Determine the Angle of the Ball

The angle of the head is established at the very beginning of the drawing with the ball. All 3 axes must be addressed:

10 Axis – The up and downwardly tilt is established past the angles of the horizontal and vertical lines in the oval. Also, on farthermost up tilts and down tilts, the thirds will be foreshortened considering of perspective.

rotate x

Y Centrality – The management the head is turning (left or right) is established by the width of the oval. Equally the head turns towards you, yous can see more of the forepart of the confront and less of the side, so the oval representing the side volition get narrower. Similarly, when the head turns abroad from y'all, more than of the side plane is revealed and the oval will appear wider.

rotate y

Z Axis – The twist is established by the angle of the middle line, the angle of the oval and the placement of the oval on the ball.

rotate z

Step ii – Find the Thirds

Afterward establishing the angle of the ball, divide the face into thirds. The altitude between the hairline and forehead-line should be the same every bit the distance between the forehead-line and bottom of the olfactory organ. Add together that same distance to find the chin. Notice how the  hairline and nose-line align with the top and bottom bottom of the oval when wrapped around the confront. Imagine the head every bit a box. The thirds must be wrapped effectually the side airplane and front plane.

Pace 3 – Add the Jaw

A common mistake at this point is to make the jaw too long in comparison to the brawl. Make sure to measure your thirds correctly and that they relate correctly to the brawl. Observe how the shape of the jaw changes from diverse angles.

add the jaw

Pace iv – Add the Features

With this bones structure properly established, it becomes much easier to add the features in the right place.
